Birthday News

David our Son-in-law and father of our two delightful grandchildren was 40 this week.
The blog of his party was delayed as Google decided to blacklist it as a Spam Blog?
But all is well and it can be seen here.

Here's a strange picture of Wendy with a young Krow Coles.
Taken about 30 years ago with Kodak Ektachrome Infrared Aero Film.
A false colour film developed during the Korean War to spot camouflage.
Grass reflects infrared light and turns red, green paint and camouflage doesn't.

At first glance I thought this was a tatty bike.
Then I realised that it had a miniscooter attached as a lifeboat!

We have an interesting collection of fungi growing in the orchard.
Wendy thinks some of them look edible, but we're not going to risk it!

Election 1992

In 1992 I was sent to London to meet Chris Patton as he left his flat in London at 6.30am.

Then I went in his car to Conservative Central Office to Photograph him with the then Prime Minister John Major, and others at the press conference.

Finally I watched him board his helicopter back to Bath.

None of these pictures were ever published.

One of the latest problems in our area is mini motorbikes, you can't insure them or ride them on the road, footpath, park or car park.
You can only ride them on private land with the owner's permission; even so we are plagued by kids riding on the country roads and bridle tracks.
Despite this I have been to Trowbridge today and found the phone shop in the Shires giving them away with Orange phone contracts.

In 1992 local MP Chris Patten was directing the Conservative election.

Prime Minister John Major came to Bath to supports him.

I was sent to photograph his arrival at Lulsgate airport.

Then I had to drive to Thornbury near Bristol, while he went by helicopter.

These pictures show some of the problems faced on this sort of job, as you fight with dozens of other photographers and large crowds to get good pictures.

None of these pictures have ever been published as we only ran the Bath pictures.

About 6pm we had one of the heaviest storms in recent years, losing the satellite signal for half an hour.

Nicky and Andy were about a mile away walking Storm (Paddy had the sense not to go).

Here are a couple of pictures of Andy emptying his trainers.

Kiss for a new sister

If you work with photographers, on building sites and down mines you often see them wearing a hard hat back to front.

This is because the peak gets in the way and stops you getting your eye close enough to the viewfinder.

I was still surprised when a naval officer asked to look at my new Nikon D2s, to see him put his cap back to front.

I had my one-to-one with the new editor Sam Holliday today.

Want to know what he’s like, well he has a permanent smile, and though he’s been with us for over a month now, I have heard not a word of criticism from inside or outside the paper.

So it looks like the Chronicle is in safe hands.

In December 1974 the IRA blew up the corridor in Bath, my picture of the damage is here.
But here is an unpublished picture of the collection of Hillman Imp police cars that dashed to the scene.
