Now is the time to plan a trip to Padstow it's famous for the May Day celebrations and hobby horse.
I remember when I was young we were staying near Newquay in a caravan, Dad asked the milkman what time the celebrations started, it was about 9am and the milkman said "they will all be drunk by now".
We visited again in the 80s and these pictures were taken with a Pentax 6x7.
This strange looking creature made of a black tarpaulin over a circular frame with a man in a fearsome mask and pointed hat cavorts through Padstow every May Day driven by the teaser. He is accompanied by accordion and drums and the Padstow May-day song.
Unite and unite and let us all unite,
For summer is i-cum-en today,
And whither we are going we all will unite,
In the merry morning of May
The 'Oss sinks to the ground and a slower song is sung with the following strange lyrics:
Oh where is St George, oh where is he Oh?
He's out in his long boat, all on the salt sea Oh.
Up flies the kite, down falls the lark Oh,
Aunt Ursula Birdhood she had an old yow,
and she died in her own park Oh.
He soon jumps up again and is off dancing through the streets.
